The Niger Delta has experienced conflict for decades as the Nigerian government, multinational oil companies, and the indigenous Ogoni people have fought over the use and exploitation of the region's precious land under which vast reserves of oil sit. In 2002, 600 village women living in the Niger Delta, took over 700 workers hostage, without ever threatening the use of violence.  Instead, they threatened the use of the nonviolent tactic of protest disrobing.
