Announcement of Executive Transition
March 29, 2021
Hardy Merriman announced today that he will be stepping down from his position as ICNC President & CEO, effective June 30, 2021. Thereafter he will become a senior advisor to ICNC and remain a member of ICNC’s Board. Board Chair Peter Ackerman will assume the role of President & CEO effective July 1, 2021.
Hardy Merriman stated: “I have always felt fortunate to be part of an organization that does such meaningful and impactful work. The people, the programs, and ICNC’s mission deeply inspire me. ICNC has significantly advanced the study, practice, and support of civil resistance globally. Over many years, these activities have increased prospects for movements to win human rights and democracy.”
“After working with ICNC since 2005, including the last six years in leadership, I have decided that now is the time for me to step down. The Board and I have discussed this decision and my desire for greater flexibility with my time. I look forward to continuing to support ICNC as a senior advisor, as well as other like-minded organizations assisting nonviolent movements worldwide.”
Peter Ackerman stated: “I want to thank Hardy Merriman for more than fifteen years of work, service, and leadership at ICNC. He has been an extraordinarily effective CEO. Hardy will continue to be one of the most important people in the world working in the field of civil resistance. I look forward to collaborating with him as a trusted advisor on ICNC’s most important projects in the future, and as a member of ICNC’s Board. I have no doubt his efforts will advance the field to wherever it needs to go.”
Merriman added: “I’d like to take this opportunity to recognize several colleagues, each of whom represents an aspect of ICNC.”
“First, ICNC is a team, and I want to thank each member of the ICNC staff for contributing so much to our shared mission. I am incredibly proud of what we’ve accomplished together, carried by your talents and commitment.”
“Second, ICNC is collaborative, and I want to thank the thousands of people from all over the world with whom ICNC has had the privilege of interacting over the years. You inspire us and have taught us along the way.”
“Lastly, ICNC is based on vision and commitment from our Board, and I want to express my deep gratitude to the Ackerman family, without whom none of this would have been possible. For nearly four decades, they have put their beliefs into action by supporting the field of civil resistance and dissidents across the globe. The world is a better place for their contributions and generosity, and for the passion and commitment of those who built on the opportunities they created.”
