With unanimous support from the Board of Directors, Ivan Marovic is now ICNC’s new Executive Director. Hardy Merriman has agreed to return to the role of President.
Marovic and Merriman will work together to expand ICNC’s core programs and diversify funding sources—including soliciting philanthropic grants as well as pursuing consulting relationships with organizations that seek to engage ICNC’s expertise in civil resistance, movement building, training, research, education, and other areas.
ICNC Board Member and President Hardy Merriman stated: “Over the last 25 years, Ivan Marovic has established himself as one of the leading thinkers and trainers in the field of civil resistance. During that time, he and ICNC have had extensive collaboration on a variety of projects, and we were thrilled to have Ivan officially join ICNC’s staff on January 1, 2022. Since his arrival, Ivan has excelled and expanded his role, and we are fortunate now to have him as Executive Director on the next phase of ICNC’s journey. As Ivan leads the day-to-day affairs of ICNC, I look forward to working closely alongside him, and supporting his leadership, ICNC, and our critical mission.”
ICNC’s Executive Director Ivan Marovic said: “It’s a privilege and an honor to be given this opportunity, especially at such a critical moment for global democracy, which, I believe, will be decided by citizens employing civil resistance. Nonviolent action is now recognized as a political method of choice by many movements around the world, thanks to ICNC’s research, development and dissemination of educational resources over the years. I was happy to join the team earlier this year, but even more excited to take the role of ICNC’s Executive Director and work closely with Hardy on this new chapter of the organization and the field.”
Marovic continued: “Building on ICNC’s capacity as a knowledge resource for practitioners and scholars, my vision is to increase our direct engagement with activists and organizers around the world. We will offer training, coaching and mentoring—in-person and online—on civil resistance, citizen self-organizing, and movement building, and further advance applied research on these topics. We also will make our expertise, as consultants and implementing partners, available to organizations focused on democracy, human rights and governance that seek to incorporate people powered strategies in their work.”
